The park is looped by a barrier-free crushed rock trail. The Olympia City Council purchased this land in 1999. Margaret McKenny Park was officially named on January 13, 2009. Margaret McKenny, an Olympia resident, was instrumental in saving Watershed Park from construction in 1955.

This park does not have any designated automobile parking. Explore Mission Creek Nature Park by bike, walking, or taking the bus. Take Intercity Transit route 21 from the Olympia Transit Center to San Francisco Avenue and Central Street and get off. One block east on San Francisco Avenue is a park entrance.

This property was bought in 1997 and turned into a community park in 2002. The Washington Interagency Committee for Outdoor Recreation awarded the city a matching grant for park purchase and development. In 2020, the playground was replaced.

Watershed Park, a 153-acre temperate rain forest public park in Olympia, Washington, supplied nearly all of the city's water in the late 1800s via privately established wells. Starting in 1917, the city purchased and operated the wells until the municipal water supply was replaced in the 1950s.

Sunrise Park was designed in 1991-1992 in collaboration with the park's neighbors and the Westside Neighborhood Association. In 1995, the park was dedicated and opened. Sunrise Park is home to one of two City of Olympia Parks Community Gardens. The garden was first developed in 2007 in collaboration with GRuB, Together! , as well as the USDA. In 2011, City of Olympia Parks, Arts and Recreation took over management of the Sunrise Community Garden from GRuB and constructed 55 upgraded garden plots and a state of the art compost structure, a covered seating area and new tool shed. In March of 2012, the new Sunrise Community Garden was completed. Brand new playground was installed at the park in 2015.
