A group of locals in Jefferson County, Kansas, who were concerned about stray and abandoned animals founded the Jefferson County Humane Society in 1998. JCHS established a no-kill shelter in Valley Falls on January 2, 2006.

The only organization working to construct and run a no-kill pet animal shelter for all Leavenworth County residents is Leavenworth County Humane Society, Inc. We run out of a converted plant nursery that has room for 10 dogs and up to 20 cats while we raise the money to build.
