1501. Carmel Beach

This is a lovely beach with the world's happiest dogs — you'll see dogs of all shapes, sizes, and ages running in the sugar sand and splashing in the blue surf. At the Ocean Avenue end of Carmel Beach, there are public bathrooms and a public phone.

1502. Baker Beach

Pet-friendly Baker Beach in San Francisco, about a mile south of the Golden Gate Bridge, is a terrific place to take your dog for a view of the iconic landmark. On Baker Beach north of Lobos Creek, dogs are allowed off-leash, but they must be on a leash south of Lobos Creek.

1503. Arroyo Burro Beach (Hendry's Beach)

The beach that runs beneath the Douglas Family Preserve in the City of Santa Barbara is dog-friendly and off-leash; it starts east of the slough at Arroyo Burro Beach (locals call it Hendry's Beach) and stretches almost to the steps at Mesa Lane. The eastern boundary is defined by fallen eucalyptus trees. From the Arroyo Burro parking lot, go to the beach, turn left, and bridge the slough to reach the off-leash legal area. Please keep your dog on a leash until you cross the slough, both in the parking lot and on the beach.

Pets are welcome on the Cabrillo Tide Pools Coastal Trail. With Fido, this simple 0.5 mile hike at Cabrillo National Monument will take about 1 hour. Although some individuals along the trail may inform you that dogs are not permitted, this trail is the only dog-friendly area in Cabrillo National Monument. On the way to the tide pools, Fido must be kept on a leash. In the tide pools, dogs are not permitted. Remember to clean up after your dog.

Ranch de Stunts The Santa Monica Mountains Reserve, also known as UCLA Stunt Ranch, is a 121-hectare reserve and biological field station operated by the University of California Natural Reserve System in Los Angeles County. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is encircled by the reserve, which protects habitat.

1506. Calabasas Cold Creek Trail

Climb the Calabasas-Cold Creek Trail with your dog to the peak of Calabasas Peak. This 4.5-mile round-trip climb gains 750 feet in elevation and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area.

Head up the Sandstone Peak Walk if you and your dog are experienced hikers seeking for more than a leisurely trail. This 6.25-mile circular route features a 1,075-foot elevation increase and offers wide views of the surrounding area once you reach the peak. Dogs should always be leashed, and their owners should tidy up after their pets.

At Paramount Ranch, take a walk with your dog through the prop buildings of an old movie village. The Paramount Ranch trails and prop town, which have been used as the set of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" and many other films and series, are a fascinating spot to explore with your leashed dog. To get to the "Western Town," cross the bridge. Except for the trail that leads to Mulholland Highway, all trailheads are accessible from Western Town.

This Garden of the Gods, which has several interesting rock formations, welcomes petzooie on a leash. The 23-acre Garden of the Gods park is located in Chatsworth's northwest corner.

Zuma Canyon Loop Trail is a pleasant hike in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Leashed (no longer than six feet) pets are welcome to join their humans as they hike along this trail, which is a wonderful spot to take in the changing seasons. A variety of trees make for a colorful fall and winter season. The creek that runs through the canyon flows all year, but at times can be only a trickle.
