The park was created with the cooperation of numerous community volunteers and is named after Doyle Cates, an enthusiastic young volunteer. The park was handed to the city in 1984, and it continues to serve as a playground for children today. The park includes a lot of open space for games and activities.

The Snohomish County Parks System includes the Tambark Creek Park dog park. The off-leash area is around 2-3 acres in size and is totally enclosed with plants and trees. The entrance is conveniently located near the parking lot and is furnished with trash bags. It does not have water at the time of writing (October 2013).
