Animal Shelters
Animal Shelters Near You — Give a Pet a Second Chance
Every year, millions of dogs, cats, and other animals end up in shelters across the United States — many of them healthy, loving, and eager for a forever home. Petzooie makes it easy to connect with local animal shelters so you can explore adoptable pets, volunteer your time, or donate to support the animals in your community.
Why Adopt from a Shelter?
Adopting from a shelter is one of the most rewarding decisions a person can make. You are not just gaining a companion — you are directly saving a life and making room for another animal in need. Shelter pets come in all sizes, breeds, ages, and personalities. Many are already house-trained, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped, which can significantly reduce your initial costs.
What to Expect When Visiting a Shelter
- An intake process where you complete an adoption application
- Meet-and-greet sessions with animals to find the right personality match
- Transparent health history and behavioral assessments for each animal
- Adoption fees that typically cover spay/neuter, vaccines, and microchip
- Post-adoption support from shelter staff
Types of Animal Shelters
Municipal (Government-Run) Shelters
These are operated by local governments and often accept all animals regardless of space. They are open-admission facilities and typically serve the widest geographic area.
Private Nonprofit Shelters
These organizations raise their own funding and often have more resources for animal enrichment, behavioral rehabilitation, and long-term care. Some are no-kill facilities.
Rescue Organizations
Rescues are typically foster-based and specialize in specific breeds or species. They operate without a physical shelter, placing animals in temporary homes until adoption.
Beyond Adoption: How You Can Help
- Fostering — temporarily house animals while they await adoption
- Volunteering — walk dogs, socialize cats, assist with events
- Donating — food, blankets, toys, and financial contributions are always needed
- Spreading the word — sharing adoptable animals on social media saves lives

For the purpose of rescuing abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats, the Save Our Strays (S.O.S.) Animal Shelter was established in 1981. In 1987, after six years of arduous volunteer effort and financial support from private citizens and companies, we were able to open our no-kill shelter. As a private, 501(c)(3) non-profit, all of our funding comes from donations and fundraising.

The Humane Society of West Alabama is a nonprofit, no-kill organization that was established in 1971. Since we have no overhead expenses, the majority of the money we raise goes directly toward helping the dogs and cats in our care. We receive no funding from any national humanitarian group or governmental body. To keep doing our job, we rely on donations and fundraisers.

We are a no-kill animal shelter with private funding. We don't get any government funding or grants from the HSUS; we exclusively get funding from supporters. All of the animals in our care have undergone a thorough examination, which includes spaying or neutering, immunizations, illness tests (for heartworm and feline leukemia/HIV), a microchip, and any other necessary care.

The WHS is a nonprofit organization that provides public services with a focus on reducing animal suffering. All of the WHS's work is done by volunteers, with the exception of the staff members of our shelter. Since we do not receive any financing from the federal, state, or municipal governments, we must only rely on the kind gifts of our neighbors.

Our goal is to find permanent homes for the stray, abandoned, and owner-returned animals in our community, set the bar for responsible pet ownership, and inform the public about the advantages of having their animals spayed or neutered. We gladly promote our organization by taking part in local events since we are involved in our community.
