Throughout the year, the sanctuary offers a home to countless animals (both abused and homeless). They receive excellent care while waiting to be placed in safe homes. The animals are gently and mercifully put to death if they are ill, seriously damaged, or unadoptable.

The historic city of Petersburg, Virginia, is home to the open-door public shelter known as Petersburg Animal Care and Control. We welcome any animals that city residents need to bring to us. The Hopewell Humane Society is a volunteer-run, non-profit group. We assist unwanted and abandoned animals. HHS does not receive any tax money, but its efforts are supported by the local United Way.

The Animal Control Unit of the Charles City County Sheriff's Office looks into cases of animal cruelty, issues licenses, enforces rabies laws, collects stray or dangerous animals, and offers a lost and found service. The animal control officers also arrange adoptions and provide humane care for stray, abandoned, and domesticated animals (dogs, cats, birds, poultry, and livestock).
