Joaquin Miller Dog Park (2023 Guide)
Joaquin Miller Dog Play Area can be found at 3590 Sanborn Drive within Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland. Even before the changes made in 2014, dogs were permitted in Joaquin Miller Park, albeit required to be on a leash. The dog play area offers a space where dogs can freely engage in play.
Upon entering the park, if you proceed past the initial parking lot, you will discover the dog area situated on the left side, accompanied by additional parking spaces designated for the play area. Separate sections are available for both large and small dogs.
During peak hours, both areas are typically occupied by dogs, but if you visit during off-peak times, you can often enjoy the place without much company. Access to the dog park is still possible even if the gate on Joaquin Miller is closed; simply park your vehicle and proceed on foot.
The dog play area, while modest, consists of a fenced wood chip area, which is generally well-maintained and surrounded by majestic redwood trees.

What is Special about Joaquin Miller Dog Park?
Parking and Location: There are ample vehicle parking spaces adjacent to the dog park. Visitors can conveniently park their vehicles in close proximity to the dog park, ensuring easy access for dog owners and their furry companions.
Off-Leash Exercise Areas: The dog park consists of two spacious areas designated by the Oakland authorities for off-leash dog exercise. These areas provide ample room for dogs to roam, run, and play freely without the constraint of a leash.
- Joaquin Miller Dog Park (Large Dogs): Joaquin Miller Dog Park is specifically designed for exercising large dogs. It offers a generous space where larger breeds can stretch their legs, engage in energetic activities, and socialize with other dogs under the supervision of their owners.
- Gizmo Land (Small Breeds): Gizmo Land, on the other hand, is a dedicated area within the dog park reserved for exercising small breeds weighing under twenty-five pounds. This section caters to the exercise needs of smaller dogs, allowing them to safely interact and play with dogs of similar size.
Secure Enclosures: Both the Joaquin Miller Dog Park and Gizmo Land are fully enclosed with waist-high chain link fencing. These secure enclosures ensure that dogs cannot wander off and provide a safe environment for off-leash play. Each section also features double-gated staging areas, further enhancing the security of the dog park and preventing accidental escapes.
Park Features and Surfaces: The off-leash areas are surfaced with a combination of dirt and bark chippings, providing a natural and comfortable terrain for dogs to explore and play on. Additionally, large tree trunks are strategically placed on the ground, offering additional elements of doggy entertainment and interaction within the park.
Leash Requirements and Dog Limit: To ensure the safety and control of dogs, owners must keep their pets leashed until fully inside either of the off-leash sections. Once inside, dogs are free to enjoy off-leash exercise. However, owners are limited to exercising a maximum of three dogs at any given time to maintain manageable conditions within the park.
Licensing, Vaccination, and Supervision: All dogs utilizing the dog park facilities must be licensed and up-to-date with vaccinations. Furthermore, it is required that owners closely supervise their dogs at all times and maintain continuous eye contact. Dogs should be trained to respond to voice commands, ensuring a harmonious and controlled environment for all park visitors.
Amenities and Cleanliness: As there are no water fountains or spigots within the park, it is recommended that owners bring bottled water and a drinking bowl for their dogs to stay hydrated during their visit. While poop bag dispensers are available on-site, it is advisable for owners to carry their supply of poop bags as the dispenser's stock may sometimes be depleted.
It is obligatory for owners to promptly clean up all fecal matter, and containers for the disposal of used bags are conveniently provided within the park for proper waste management.
