Wilkes County Animal Services

A stray animal must be kept by us for at least 72 hours. Many lost pets that are found without tags and are not adoptable are put to death. Each year, the Animal Shelter gets more than 6,000 impounds. It is impossible to find loving and caring homes for all of them.

The Watauga Humane Society was established on December 12th, 1969, to provide shelter, care, and adoption services for stray, unwanted, and abandoned animals. Since then, we have thankfully expanded to fulfill the demands of Watauga County's residents and animals. To maximize our efforts to save lives, we joined with Watauga County Animal Care and Control in 2011 and built a new facility.
