CCHS was established in 1974 to support animals in our neighborhood by offering foster homes for abandoned and mistreated animals. The Keweenaw Animal Alliance (KAA) was established as the region's first animal refuge in 1992.

OCAP (Ontonagon County Animal Protection)

The majority of the shelter's running funds—which are used for things like electricity, upkeep, food, and veterinary care—come from membership fees, donations, and fundraisers, but they haven't kept up with costs. OCAP sought a millage of 0.15 mils for four years beginning in 2013 in order to provide a reliable source of funding. In terms of taxable property value, this equates to 15 cents every $1,000 ($4.50 per year on $30,000.00). We are appreciative that Ontonagon County voters approved this millage to fund the shelter.

North Woods Animal Shelter

Volunteers cleaned and painted extensively, added dog and cat cages, and built a sizable outside dog run to improve the living conditions for the animals. Along with daily cleaning, the volunteers give the animals exercise, grooming, and basic medical attention.
