Smelly Dog, the first self-serve dog wash in the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, first launched in 2005. Smelly Dog is recognised for its cage-free environment, but it also offers full-service dog grooming, daycare, and dog washing. When dogs are confined in cages, they become more fearful and uneasy, and adding a loud dryer to the mix only adds to their panic. All dogs are dried by hand by Smelly Dog's bathers and groomers, allowing them to spend more time with each dog one-on-one. After they've been cleaned, dogs can relax or socialise in the "clean dog lounge." As a result, bathing and grooming are less stressful for the dogs. Smelly Dog accepts only friendly, non-aggressive dogs because it is a cage-free environment.
