Through the compassionate treatment of animals and community education, to foster respect for all life and to strengthen the relationship between humans and animals.

Initially, the mission of Heartland Small Animal Rescue was to rescue small pocket pets from shelters, including rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small & furry animals, and place them in loving homes through our established adoption program.

To safeguard the health and welfare of each animal placed in our organization's care and to find them the best home possible.

There are a lot of community cats in South Bend that roam freely. If the cats are healthy, there is no reason for them to enter the shelter. To learn more about cats that roam freely, please get in touch with us.

Each month, the HSEC looks into an average of 100 reports of animal cruelty or neglect. The HSEC team supports law enforcement organizations during every stage of the legal system, from inquiry to prosecution.

In addition to running the county animal shelter, we offer animal control services to all of La Porte County's unincorporated areas.
