Animal Samaritans was started in 1978 by a group of local animal enthusiasts who wanted to put a stop to the suffering, abuse, and senseless deaths of local shelter animals, as well as teach future pet owners about proper pet keeping. Animal Samaritans has grown to become the desert's largest and most comprehensive animal welfare organization, adopting out more than 10,000 homeless dogs and cats, rescuing more than 14,000 adoptable, at-risk shelter animals, and spaying and neutering more than 200,000 pets over the course of more than four decades of service. More than 250,000 school children have been taught about animal kindness and responsible pet ownership, and we've performed tens of thousands of pet therapy visits to people in need. Animal Samaritans have a compassionate and respectful attitude toward all living creatures, with a special concentration on dogs and cats.
