Contra Costa County's Animal Services Department has a long history. Animal Control (as it was known at the time), which had five staff, was transferred from the Sheriff's Office to the County Agriculture Department in 1959. In 1985, Animal Services was separated from the rest of the County. The first shelter was one block from where we are currently on Martinez's eastern outskirts. The Board of Supervisors and local dignitaries dedicated a gorgeous two-acre state-of-the-art shelter complex and six-stall barn with open corral space, totalling more than 38,000 square feet, in May 2005.
