In Massena, New York, a private animal sanctuary called the Massena Humane Society takes in up to 1000 stray cats and dogs annually.

In the Black Lake area of Northern New York, GFAS is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization committed to animal rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming, and for some, a loving forever home. Since 2002, Gracious Friends has taken care of a large number of confiscated, abandoned, or surrendered domesticated animals that have been mistreated and neglected. Donations, grants, and fundraising activities are how we get our money.
