In 2001, the doors of the Guardian Angels Cat Club were opened, thanks to the vision of Virginia Harvey and others. Originally situated at 873 Park Avenue in Hot Springs' Historic District, the Shelter could accommodate roughly 100 cats and kittens at once.

In 1977, he then began working for the City of Hot Springs Animal Services. Animal fighting is now a crime in Arkansas thanks in large part to John's efforts. Additionally, he was a founding member of the Arkansas State Animal Control Association, which helped the state's animal control officers get certified.
