Dr. Coles had wanted to be a veterinarian since he was a child. She grew up loving animals and being captivated by science and environment. She lost a cherished cat when she was five years old. "Little lady, have your Mother get you another kitty," the gentle veterinarian remarked as he patted her on the head. Those comments altered her life, and she determined to become a veterinarian and never speak those words to another bereaved youngster again. She has honored her promise even after 33 years of medical practice.
