Dr. Tamura was born and raised in Japan. She lived in Australia for four years as a child, where she developed a passion for animals. When she was fourteen years old, her family relocated to California, where she finished high school. She received her Bachelor of Science in 1994 from Cornell University in New York, where she studied animal sciences. She attended Colorado State University to study veterinary medicine. She performed internships at the Centers for Disease Control's Vector Borne Disease Branch and Feline Retrovirus Lab while she was a veterinary student. She participated actively in the student chapter of the Association of Avian Veterinarians and the Rocky Mountain Raptor Program as a volunteer.
