The Humane Society of San Bernardino Valley was formed on March 16, 1970, thanks to the hard work and dedication of a few core volunteers dedicated to caring for and protecting animals in order to improve their quality of life. There were numerous hurdles, as with any fresh start-up company. It was a time of promise and disappointment, as well as hope and despair. Along this difficult route, the Society's objective became to provide quality animal care to the citizens of San Bernardino and their pets, adequate to meet local requirements. Joyce Young Martin, a true visionary, inspired and guided this dream. According to Beatrice Tupman Prothero, who wrote the Society's initial history.
