After graduating from Elida High School in 1987, Garland and Leslie went on to ENMU, where Garland pursued his interest of caring for cattle while Leslie obtained her bachelor's degree in accounting and business administration. When the chance to launch their own firm arose in 1996, they were both working in agriculture and had been married since 1990. After acquiring a grain elevator and warehouse from a business that was about to file for bankruptcy, they established Creighton Commodity Corp. in Elida, NM, in 1997.
