Smelly Dog is the Phoenix Metropolitan Area's first self-serve dog wash, having opened in 2005. Smelly Dog is known for its cage-free atmosphere, but it also provides full-service dog washing, grooming, and daycare. When dogs are confined in cages, they often grow more frightened and nervous, and adding a loud dryer to the cage only adds to their terror. Smelly Dog's bathers and groomers dry all dogs by hand, allowing them to spend more one-on-one time with each dog. Dogs can rest or play with other dogs in the "clean dog lounge" once they've been cleaned. Bathing and grooming become less traumatic for the dogs as a result. Because Smelly Dog is cage-free, it will only accept friendly, non-aggressive dogs.
