In 1955, Howard Soldan (Senior) bought a business that sold mostly to farmers and sold goods like feed and fertilizer. Under Soldan's direction, it serviced the Lansing area as Ruhf's Feed Store until he sold it in 1972.

They began to enjoy some leisure time, expecting that a chapter of their lives had come to an end. Howard and Erna Soldan planned to semi-retire and spend their summers on Mackinac Island with their youngest son, Howard Soldan II.
