August and Carl Zamzow snuck away aboard a train from Minnesota to California, and the company was founded in 1933. August jumped off the train in Meridian to fetch them some lunch, but the train took off before he could get back on. August sought jobs and planted roots in Meridian after becoming stranded. Carmalita House, afterwards known as Grandma Z, was his first wife.
