Unable to choose between shelter and keeping her dogs, a homeless Farmington woman is forced to make a difficult decision.
FARMINGTON, New Mexico – A Farmington lady is in a situation she never imagined she would be in: she is homeless and may be forced to give up her pets.
After the epidemic took a toll on her company and finances, the woman, who requested anonymity and did not want to be photographed, is currently living in a car with her pets.
She stated, I've been homeless, or houseless, today.
She could go to a homeless shelter, but she would have to make a difficult decision.
Unable to choose between shelter and keeping her dogs, a homeless Farmington woman is forced to make a difficult decision.
The woman explained, I have my animals - a dog and a cat – and they are telling me that I have to get rid of them, so either surrender or find someone to take care of them.
She contacted the animal shelter as well as other agencies. While she has not received a response from the groups, she did receive a response from the animal shelter. The shelter, however, verified that they are unable to temporarily house animals and that she would have to relinquish them completely.
Her cat and dog have been with her for almost ten years. It's impossible to imagine them being rehomed at this point.
I adore them; they're my family, and I've had them for a long time, she continued.
Pets are not allowed in most homeless shelters in the area.
They informed me that if you don't follow our guidelines, we won't be able to help you,she said.
By staying in a hotel, the woman has been attempting to postpone her decision. That, however, became too much for her to bear, and she is now frustrated.
She continued, I need to give up my animals to be helped, and I'm not sure about that.
Her current hope is to continue looking for a temporary home for her four-legged relatives.
