In the Fountain Park neighborhood, pets were exposed to a rabid bat.
The Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District issued an advisory Wednesday after two canines came into contact with a rabid bat. The incident occurred at University and McNeil avenues in the Fountain Park neighborhood. In their backyard, the dogs were caught playing with the bat. The bat was sent to the Department of State Health Services, where it was found to be rabies positive. The dogs will be kept in a separate area.
Rabies is a fatal viral illness that mostly affects wild animals such as bats, raccoons, skunks, coyotes, and foxes, but it can also infect pets and humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people to keep away from wildlife, particularly bats, which can carry the illness all year.
