In Ireland, the dog 'Prozac' has been approved for stressed-out pandemic pets.
Now that the antidepressant Fluoxetine has been approved for use in dogs in Ireland, veterinarians have begun prescribing it for stressed-out pets. Fluoxetine is sold under the trade name Prozac in humans.
It's marketed as Reconcile and is used to treat dogs that are sad or missing their owners to the point of injuring themselves or causing damage to their owner's property.
The medication's approval is good news for veterinarians and pet owners who have noticed an upsurge in mental health issues during lockdown.
Dr Claire Corridan, a veterinarian and animal behaviorist, said she has dealt with clients whose dogs are inflicting thousands of euro worth of damage to their houses in an attempt to reconcile with their owners.
