Below are some suggestions for keeping your pet safe in sub-zero weather.
(WOWT) - OMAHA, Neb. - This week, Omaha has experienced temperatures in the single digits. However, keeping your pet buddies warm is a major problem in the winter.
One answer may appear obvious, but it is still critical.
"Getting pets indoors is one of the nicest things you can do with them in inclement weather." If you can't get them all the way inside, put them in a garage where the wind isn't as strong," said Pam Wiese of the Nebraska Humane Society.
If you have a dog who needs to stay warm in the winter, the Nebraska Humane Society recommends that the dog house has enough area for the dog to curl up, a doggie door to keep the wind out, and good insulation such as straw or other materials to keep the heat in.
Even if it's cold outside, it's critical that they stay hydrated.
"Water is necessary because you need it to process food, and you need it to process food to burn calories, thus water is just as important in the winter as it is in the summer."
Huskies, for example, are built for the cold. Short-haired canines like boxers and pit bulls, on the other hand, are not built for the cold. As a result, short-haired dogs should be brought inside as soon as possible.
"Any of those guys with a really gleaming light coat." Those guys won't be able to resist the cold as well as the triple coaters."
