Are Pets Effective in Improving the Mental Health of College Students?
I had no idea so many college students had pets.
Surely everyone was too busy with schooling to have time for a pet, I thought. That was before I got betta fish, a hamster, and a rescue cat. Initially, my roommate and I shared a betta fish.
My roommate and I had a blast picking out the bowl's bright pebbles, plants, and fish accessories. The fish was entertaining to gaze at and gave me a sense of purpose. Something was on me.
Fish are also cheap and easy. A betta fish is a great easy pet to brighten your day. Just like any other pet, do your homework beforehand.
This year, my boyfriend and I got a hamster. It turns out that Hammie (his name is “Hammie”) does not like people very much. I still can pet him, but he nibbles.
Despite being a naughty hamster, Hammie makes me grin. They're cute just looking at them. I just sit with my hamster when I'm sad, irritated, or overburdened with homework. He does something humorous or cute, and it makes me smile.
My boyfriend suggested acquiring a cat a few months after I got my hamster. I was concerned at first; cats are a lot of effort and a lot of commitment. We found Manon after much searching. Our 7-year-old Point Lynx Siamese cat altered my life.
I know it seems dramatic, but having a cat helps. I used to think ESAs were a myth. Depression-fighting cats? Canine anxiety therapy? As someone who suffers both of those mental conditions, I can vouch for my cat's assistance.
Manon makes me want to get out of bed. When he notices a change in my mood, Manon jumps on the bed to check on me.
Pandemic lonesomeness Everyone was afraid to leave their homes, because who else lives there besides humans? Pets. The list goes on and on.
Pets provide comfort and companionship. Pets aren't picky. Except for my hamster, who hates me to death.
Not only me. My pal Aubrey originally persuaded me to acquire Manon. Mina is my best friend, Aubrey says of her rescued kitten. We are in love. After a tough day, I can come home to her joy. Overall, pets are great companions and can aid with mental health.
