Despite this, Walter worked as a dog trainer all across the country and had a soft spot for veterans through his organization - his father served in Vietnam and his son in the Army.
I've always trained dogs for veterans, he added, but it wasn't as severe as it has been in the last four or five years. He was crippled with PTSD when he came out.
Now that he's approaching retirement, he wants to use that time to rekindle the goal of reopening the business in Detroit, on Tyler Street, which they still own.
My desire is to have veterans come in with certificates in training and train dogs for other PTSD veterans, he said.
Veterans supporting veterans — he even plans to deploy Detroit-based rescue canines as therapy dogs with the proper training. The first task right now is to get the property back in working order.
Volunteers to help us clean, then generating money for the kennels, and then going from there, he explained.
