On the public beach, dogs on a leash are welcome all year. The greatest area on Dauphin Island set aside for dogs and their owners to run and play on the sand and in the surf is the public beach near the Red School House and the old fishing pier. There are at least a few miles of beach there, and now that Sand Island has been joined to Dauphin Island, there are another three miles of unspoiled sand on that barrier island protruding out into the Gulf. Dogs are welcome at Dauphin Island's main public beach and the Dauphin Island Campground, but not at the West Extremity Beach Park on the island's far western end.
