Visit this stretch of land, which is the site of one of humanity's most well-known migration stories. It also has the largest maar lakes in the world, as well as wandering caribou and steaming hot springs. Dogs are permitted on the preserve, but they must be kept on a six-foot leash at all times. Because there are no roads leading into the preserve, access is limited. During the summer, the preserve is only accessible by small plane, boat, or foot. Bush planes on skis or dog sleds are the primary modes of transportation in the winter. Access can also be made by snowmobile once there is enough snow cover.The visitor center in Nome can offer you with a list of allowed chartered air taxis, as well as exhibitions, films, and other interpretive activities about the preserve.
