One of the nation's first SPCAs, Dutchess County SPCA was established in 1871. It is a no-kill facility and the only animal welfare group with a charter to uphold humane laws in Dutchess County.

Since 1891, the private, nonprofit Ulster County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has provided services to the county that bears its name.
